Vertigo Treatment

Treatment of vertigo is accomplished through vestibular physical therapy techniques. Vestibular therapy is a specialized program designed to assist patients with symptoms of vertigo, dizziness, and/or imbalance related resulting from inner ear problems or vestibular system deficits.

What is Vertigo?

• Vertigo is a sensation of motion in which the individual's surroundings seem to whirl dizzily.
• Symptoms may result from inner ear, neurological, or medical causes.
• Can lead to decreased ability to perform daily activities and interact socially.

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo

• Name given for classic vertigo.
• Single most common cause of dizziness in the clinic.
• Characteristics:

  -	Brief episodes of vertigo(spinning) with changes in head position.
  -	Sense of imbalance.
  -	Extreme motion sensitivity.
  -	Feeling nauseous.

What is the Vestibular System?

This is the sensory system found in the middle ear that provides input about our movement, orientation in space, and postural stability/balance.

• Consultations to determine rehab potential for patients with complaints of vertigo, dizziness, or symptoms with a vestibular origin.
• Development of a personalized rehab program designed to restore function and alleviate or minimize symptoms.
• Education on self management techniques for performing and independent home exercise program.
